Gate 33 is the Gate of Retreat, privacy and reflection on the past. It asks us to step away from the immediacy of experience so that we can look back, digest what has happened, and perhaps eventually turn it into wisdom anchored here-now.
With Mercury and Jupiter recently meeting in this gate in Leo, and with Jupiter staying there a little while longer, this theme has felt particularly alive.
For me, these activations in Gate 33 have allowed access to a clearer understanding of an old defence mechanism - something that has been operating in the background of my life keeping me locked in the past and repeating my history. What is striking is not simply seeing the mechanism, but seeing it as something that has been running automatically, shaping choices and reactions without necessarily being so conscious about it.
And perhaps this is the deeper gift of Gate 33:
to step back far enough to witness what has been running us.
There is a beautiful paradox in Gate 33 being situated in Leo. Leo is astrologically associated with expression, creativity, visibility and the courage to be oneself in interaction with others. Yet this gate in Leo says: retreat. Step away. Become private. Don’t rush to express.
Leo therefore also suggests we need to withdraw from the performance of who we think we are in order to see ourselves more clearly.
This reminds me of something Osho repeatedly pointed towards: the importance of “leaving the rotten past behind.” Not through denial, and not by pretending that what happened did not matter, but by recognising the burden of conditioning in our lives.
The past can teach us.
But it can also become an identity.
We can spend years explaining ourselves through what happened to us, what we learned, what went wrong, what someone did or did not do. We can become so familiar with an old pattern that we mistake familiarity for truth.
The witness introduces another possibility.
The Channel of the Prodigal — the Design of the Witness — carries this movement of experience and return. We go out into life, we gather experience, and eventually we come back with something to see.
The witness doesn’t fix the past.
It sees it.
And seeing something clearly is the beginning of its release.
This is what feels particularly alive for me now. An old defence mechanism that once seemed simply to be me is becoming something I can observe.
And what can be witnessed no longer has quite the same power to operate unconsciously.
Perhaps this is what retreat is really for.
Not to live in the past.
Not to endlessly analyse it.
But to create enough distance to recognise what happened, understand what it gave us, and then decide whether we still need to carry it.
We don’t retreat so that we can remain in the past.
We retreat so that we can leave behind what belongs there.
So perhaps this is a useful question for these weeks with Jupiter in Gate 33:
What are you able to witness now that you were previously only repeating?
And once you can see it, perhaps you can finally let it go.
